Dental crowns can be a nifty way of protecting a tooth that had a bad run-in with some decay or such. However, what should you do if it takes a leave of absence and ends up on the floor or even lost? As always, the dentist can help you put it back on, or get you a replacement if necessary, but here are some things you can do before then.
This may not be necessary if you can get in to see the dentist quickly, but if you have a lot of time before the appointment and you are feeling some discomfort in the tooth, you can try this suggestion to get some relief. You can apply some clove oil to the formerly crowned tooth, which can soothe the discomfort so you can feel more relaxed. You do not have to use your fingers, as a cotton swab can help you put the oil on.
If you can, we recommend that you put the crown back on, after rinsing it of course. You can use some dental cement to glue it back on. When you do, it can be better to put the cement around the interior of the crown rather than on the tooth itself.
If you cannot put the crown back in, that is okay. You can use dental cement to coat the exposed tooth for its protection.
One thing you should never do is use household glue of any kind. These glues are not meant for your mouth, let alone your body. The dental cement is a much better and safer option.
